Five Places To Elope In Big Sur, California

Big Sur is an Amazing area that is full of adventure, or relaxation depending on what you’re looking for. Whether you imagine eloping along side the beautiful coasts and cliffs of California , or you want to spend the day driving the iconic Highway 1, there is romance around every corner. With absolutely jaw-dropping scenery and incredible pull off viewing points, Big Sur should be high on your list for places to elope!

Big Sur is an extremely easy, scenic and short drive from major cities such as LA, Santa Cruz, Monterrey and San Francisco, making it a super accessible place for you (and guests!) to fly into while still eloping off the beaten path.

Here are 5 Places to Elope in Big Sur California!

For Privacy and Accessibility: Garrapata State Park
Just a short drive from other iconic locations along the way, this state park is crawling with gorgeous flora and fauna and many easy and accessible trails for those that don’t want to do any strenuous hiking.  The views from the cliffs are amazing and there are many areas to park and pull off. Another bonus is that this park is not that busy, leaving you plenty of room to frolic along the ocean, and not worry about tourists.

  • Something that I should note is permits. When following Leave No Trace Principles, you will be required to get permits when eloping in State Parks. They are easy to obtain! There are details more on their state park website- but make sure you get your special use permit 6 months in advance. Prices can vary!

For the Iconic Big Sur Moment: Pfeiffer Beach

Hidden away down a long and bumpy county road lined with tall pines, you could drive by and miss the turn for this iconic and awe-inspiring beach. Nestled near Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, this beach gets alot of love for the incredible rocks featuring a keyhole formation. If you had your ceremony at the right time of sunset, you might luck out and get the perfect sunset through the cut outs of the gorgeous rock formations.

  • Pfeiffer Beach does not allow elopements from march to October, so it’s a great spot for when you want somewhere warmer during the cold months! The parking is limited here, but if you arrive early enough its not too crazy. Also, it’s not a state park so the rules are different as well.

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park - For the Treehuggers

Looking to elope under the incredible Redwoods of California? Head to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Although it doesn’t have beach access, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is known for it’s wonderful redwood groves and forested area where you feel like you have transported another planet. There is a great campground there that is super developed and wonderful for ceremonies and recreational use.  Feel connected with nature, and spend time with some of the oldest trees you’ll ever meet.

For a Postcard esque moment: Julia Burns Pfieffer State Park.

Here is where the famous Mcway Falls are! Although you cannot elope by Mcway Falls, it’s worth. Popping over for some photos, and there are gorgeous hikes surrounding that area. They re accessible and easy.

Andrew Molera State Park

This state park is one of my favorites because it has a few short hikes straight to the beach.  Imagine walking down the aisle, but it’s the OCEAN! How romantic. There also is a ton of surfing in that area, so it does make for some awesome waves and lots of opportunity for adventuring.

Bonus idea: Los Padres National Forest

Public land is also a great idea that I recommend! It’s the best way to find a super unique, hidden gem spot that avoids people all together. When we work together, I’ll help you find some great spots that will fit your needs help you get away from crowds. I love sharing some of my favorite locations that I’ve researched and scouted for elopements with my clients. Finding the right location to exchange your vows can make your wedding or elopement day feel SO special.

If eloping in a state park or along the seashore isn’t exactly what you imagine, but you really want that Big Sur scenery, consider eloping in one of the many amazing airbnbs, or awesome lux lodges in the area. Something I love about Big Sur is that it has alot of options for lodging depending on the type of experience you’re looking for! For example, the. Big Sur Lodge is a wonderful place to stay and host a ceremony because it is conveniently located in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.

Here are some final tips for planning your Big Sur elopement or intimate wedding:

  1. Hire a photographer with knowledge of the area! They will have your back and make sure your day goes smoothly.

  2. Lean into any wild weather you may run into- including some big coastal winds!

  3. Be ready to adventure, but understand your own limits. Practice safe hiking and only go in marked areas where foot traffic is allowed.

I love working with couples and showing them the magic of Big Sur. My favorite part is helping couples plan out their ideal elopement day and timeline, and scouting out some amazing hidden gems for them. Thinking about tying the knot in Big Sur? Let’s chat!
